LATINO HERITAGE
MONTH 2020
El Mes de la Herencia Hispana se celebra entre los días 15 de septiembre y 15 de octubre, fechas en las que se conmemora el aniversario de la independencia de varios países de Latinoamérica. Para el año 2020 los invitamos a las siguientes actividades, que se realizarán de forma virtual o sin convocatoria de público por las medidas sanitarias de la pandemia en la que nos encontramos. A pesar de los retos de esta emergencia, queremos celebrar con ustedes los elementos culturales que nos unen y representan. Tendremos eventos de danza, el ya conocido festival de Cine con Cultura, exposición de arte y una actividad musical.

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated between September 15 and October 15, dates on which the anniversary of the independence of several Latin American countries is commemorated. For the year 2020 we invite you to the following activities, which will be carried out virtually or without public events because of the health measures during the pandemic in which we find ourselves. Despite the challenges of this emergency, we want to celebrate with you the cultural elements that unite and represent us. We will have dance events, the well-known Film Festival Cine con Cultura, an art exhibition and a musical activity.

DANCE - DANZA
La danza sigue siendo un elemento central en el día a día de los países Latinoamericanos. Es un reflejo de la historia y costumbres de cada país, uno de los elementos de identidad más fuertes. Sirve para expresar sentimientos, emociones y experiencias del día a día. El baile folclórico mexicano como se conoce hoy en día, se asentó durante la revolución, la cual provocó grandes cambios sociales. En ese tiempo la danza fue la herramienta del pueblo para expresar su libertad como una celebración. Sus pasos estudiados, los detalles y el color de la vestimenta, y el vínculo con el México prehispánico son características de los bailes tradicionales de México.

Dancing is a central element in the everyday life of Latin American countries. It is a reflection of the history and traditions of every country, one of the strongest key elements of their identity. The purpose of dancing serves to express feelings, emotions and experiences. Mexican Folklore dance as it is known today, was born during the revolution in Mexico, which caused big social changes. During this time, dance was the way of Mexicans to express their freedom as a celebration. The well taught steps, the rich details and color of the clothes, and the connection with the prehispanic roots are a few characteristics of the traditional Mexican dances.
ART - ARTE
En el marco del mes de la herencia latina en Tompkins County queremos resaltar el aporte de estudiantes lantix en la educación superior en Estados Unidos. AMALGAM/A es la mezcla de materiales distintos para formar un nuevo material. El trabajo de Daniela Rivero y Sebastián Chavez nos presentan trabajos que mezclan disímiles por medio del collage y el objeto encontrado, que utilizan para resaltar sus raíces, memorias e identidades vinculadas a elementos culturales de El Salvador, México y la experiencia latinx como jóvenes en el año 2020 acompañados por la profesora de arte Paloma Barhaugh-Bordas. La exhibición estará en el ventanal de la galería del Community School of Music and Arts y en línea a partir del 2 de Octubre.

As part of Tompkins County Latino Heritage Month, we want to highlight the contribution of Lantix people to higher education in the United States. AMALGAM/A refers mixture of different materials to form a stronger one. The work of Daniela Rivero and Sebastián Chavez present us with works that mix dissimilar ones through collage and found objects, which they use to highlight their roots, memories and identities linked to cultural elements of El Salvador, Mexico and the Latinx experience as young people in the year 2020, accompanied by the work of professor Paloma Barhaugh-Bordas. The exhibition will be displayed at the window in the Community School of Music and Arts and online starting on October 2nd.
